Petition for Recognition of the Arts-City of Tucson
Tucson Pima Arts Council has a call out to sign a Petition for Recognition of the Arts in the City of Tucson Charter.

The petition has specific places to amend the charter and summarizes with these words:
We seek this inclusion because a vibrant community of artists, arts and culture organizations, and arts consumers has long been central to Tucson’s identity and national reputation as an arts-centric city, and is essential to economic development, educational achievement, and a high quality of life for its residents and visitors.

1. How did you first hear about Sonoran Arts Network?
from friends:-54%, from “other” (various sources): 30%, internet search: 26%
Editor: Please forward SAN’s website address (URL) and your SAN email newsletter to all your friends This is the best way to get out the word.
2. Which component of SAN is most important to you?
features: 54%, Interviews: 31%, reviews: 11%, My Turn: 4%
Editor: There were several requests for more features.
3. Which component of SAN is least important to you?
features: 0%, Interviews: 10%, My Turn: 60%, Reviews: 30%
Editor: Because of this feedback, My Turn has been reformatted. We’re focusing now on two types of My Turn articles: 1) excerpts from writings (poems, fiction or nonfiction excerpts, works-in-progress), artists’ studios and works in progress or special projects – not self-promotion; 2) commentary on some aspect of the arts: writing and getting grants, arts education, cooperative arts projects, artists’ processes, etc.
4. How often do you use the Calls for Entries page?
always: 2%, frequently: 13%, occasionally: 39%, never: 46%
Editor: I considered deleting this but even the mention of that brought some protest. It’s useful for those of us (myself included) who enter juried shows which helps in career building for artists.
5. How often do you think Sonoran Arts Network should be published?
monthly: 63%, quarterly: 37%
Editor: How often SAN is published depends on two factors: 1) capacity to raise funds to support this very time-consuming but unpaid project (that takes the editor’s time away from real income-generating efforts; 2) recruiting new writers to contribute to SAN. “Many hands make light work.” To sum up: SAN either needs your financial contribution or your contribution of time and effort, and even better would be contributions of both. I compromised between monthly and quarterly. We’re now on a schedule to publish every two months. If more funds and contributions come in, then we’ll go to monthly. If not, we’ll go to quarterly.
6. Which option is best to provide SAN with operating funds?
targeted ads: 51%. Only a handful of people advocated donations, subscriptions or a website store. Several people suggested using all methods.
Editor: Google Adsense is now on the SAN website. The ads will pay SAN a few cents every time each ad is clicked. Only click on ads that really interest you. Please DO NOT click aimlessly or on ads that you are not genuinely interested in. That is considered a “fraudulent click” by Google and will cause SAN to be banished forever from the kingdom of Google Adsense. Unless SAN gets a LOT MORE traffic, I don’t expect this is going to bring in much. The most original suggestions for raising funds: a) become a mule for the cartels; b) get a gun and ski mask and go to 7-11. I think I’ll stick to Google Adsense and getting help from you!

post-it page. don't know exactly what I'm getting at; a way for people to volunteer for SAN, or communicate with others who subscribe to newsletter.
I think it's good now -- a chance to "meet" artists I wouldn't normally meet or maybe I've never heard of.
I love the Sonoran Arts Network & look forward to it. I marked the once a month box but realize that's so much work for you. I think quarterly would be a problem because it would be hard to include timely items with that time span. Bi-monthly might work.
I always read the Sonoran Arts Network newsletter! Local art and artists are featured which are of interest to me. The newsletter is different from any other arts publication in Tucson that I know of. Keep up the good work!

SAN fills an important need for the arts community. I enjoy reading about the work of local artists --- and am always interested in knowing where I can see their work.
I enjoy this online mag. Hope you can keep it going. Tucson has a big enough VISUAL arts community to sustain its own magazine. If you expand your internet presence, people outside Arizona might be interested in it, esp. if coverage is expanded to all of AZ. "My turn" is a great idea but underused - perhaps if you start by approaching a well known artist and asking them to write about news/art-world subject/show (that does not include their friends)? Or interviewing them about it, if they are not a good writer?

This was a hard survey as I love everything about SAN. I look forward to reading and trust you, the writer and publisher, as you review, express your views, provide information through interviews and features. Tucson is a hard nut to crack and I have found that the arts are suffering compared to when I arrived ten years ago. The quality of artists work in Tucson is comparable to Santa Fe, they just have more artists. The art groups are also suffering due to the age of the leadership. We need more venues for showing work and the best would be an arts center. Now that would cause a stir
I enjoy reading the features and interviews that you do. I think adding some art related articles about art groups or individual artists from Tubac, Oracle or areas close to Tucson would be interesting and still relevant to Tucson subscribers.
I think you are doing a great job and I do read everything - all of the components fit well together. I like that there is an emphasis on artists, not galleries. Perhaps there might be some interest in a comments/letters to the editor section?

What is least important? Although I answered "My Turn", I really don't know what the "My Turn" article refers to…..How often should SAN be published? I read a portion of SAN just about every month and I especially enjoy hearing the wisdom of the artists' paths and reflections about their work. I enjoy monthly issues but the frequency of SAN is predicated on how much time and energy those that organizing it and contributing to it can muster. Best way to raise funds? I don't know. Kickstarter maybe?
Expanded coverage? I think the amount of info is about right. I like taking 30-45 minutes to quickly read and peruse each issue.
In the last question above, I referred to expanded coverage to include other art forms. I think it would be nice if this sort of article were submitted from the readership.

I would like to see info on workshops….2. a resources section, For example: places where you can learn printmaking and make prints. woodworkers that can make panels, frames, etc., for artists. scrap yards where you may find metal materials for art projects. welders who can manufacture things for artists. photographers who specialize in photographing art work. 3 notices about people looking to collaborate on art projects, needing help with photoshop elements, for example, or to create environments...4. . I would love to learn more about any art happenings south of the border, or of any projects involving artists from both countries, or of locations where you go to make art, learn, participate in some way.
